Interesting concept
We Hunt the Flame starts out right away with the action and immediately draws you in. Sometimes I struggle to get into fantasy, but since this one starts right away, I was immediately invested.
Honestly though, I don’t really like stories where a woman pretends to be a man and there are no unique discussions on gender. I felt like there was A TON of queer coding in this (as is common in fantasy books) but zero queer content. That was super disappointing.
A lot of Yasmine and Zafira's relationship was written like they were in love, and I think that would have made this book that much better if that had been the case. They were in love but Yasmine had to marry somebody else. I was a little disappointed to see that this just had a standard hetero romance in it.
While I wasn’t super into the main romance in this, I am a big fan of enemies-to-lovers when it’s done right.
I’m excited to see that this is being adapted into a TV show (I believe with Netflix) and I really look forward to watching that.
