This book was excellent! The slow pacing was a bit of a turn off at first, but I loved how Hafsah Faizal really turned it around and made the slower pace work to her benefit.

The world was my favorite part. It was lush and magical and so addicting. I just wanted to know all of the world building aspects.

I really liked the characters, but they weren’t the most memorable part of the story — at least for me. The side characters hold more of a grip on my mind than the main characters. I really liked the cognitive dissonance that the internal conflict had on the characters. It kept you interested in what they would do.

Zafira, for me, was a great character but she wasn’t my favorite. I loved how strong she was, but she also just lacked a layer of depth. Nasir interested me more. His constant fear and the expectations that his awful father put upon him were really intriguing.

I haven’t picked up the sequel yet and I’m not sure when it will happen, but I am interested to see what happens next.
