I came for the story, and got so much more than I bargained for. The writing is beautiful and lyrical. It gave me a very clear sense of the setting and the characters and made me wish I could step into their world instead of just imagining it.
I found the characters to be delightfully complex and multi-layered, and while the story moved slowly at times I never found it boring. Even in the slowest parts the character development was excellent, and we were fed important information in all those emotionally charged pauses.
There were some reveals at the end that I had already guessed, but I was so focused on discovering if what I had guessed was correct that I was completely floored by other reveals.
That being said the ending was not at all what I had expected, and left me feeling a bit cheated that I did not have the second book already and would have to wait to learn what happens next.
