I read this when it first came out. I got it in a book box subscription, Owl Crate.
I absolutely loved this book. It is full of middle eastern culture, which I found very fascinating. I loved how the author put in so many words from other languages. Names of food dishes, clothing, other common terms. It really made me feel like I was there in the world with the characters.
Zafira is a wonderful main character. She has a lot of personality, but cannot show anyone her true self. It was so sad to watch her have to hide who she is from her family and friends. They would not accept her, and she has learned to expect this. It’s an amazing parallel to how many people feel in the culture she was writing about.
Nasir is also an amazingly well crafted character. He is similar to Zafira in that he also has a secret personality that no one can know about. I loved seeing the two of them meet and get to know each other. They have so much in common they can bond over.
I haven’t yet read the second book, but I’m very excited to.
