One of the most stunning debuts I have read in a while! I’m not that good at writing reviews, so bear with me!

We Hunt the Flame is about The Hunter, someone who can face a pitch-black forest and come back intact.

I got this book on Bookish First, which is an awesome program you should try if you haven’t already.

I have read some opinions over the years and the hype this book has gotten so far is totally deserved it, it’s such a good debut, it had some flaws obviously and probably I’d have taken a few starts off another book, but since it is a debut I’m ok with overlooking them.

The writing was good, definitely the weak point of the whole book but not in a bad way? I mean, it looks a bit inexperienced and clunky sometimes, but you can see the potential and I’m sure the author will get better in no time. The broken-down sentences were something I didn’t like and I felt like there were too many adjectives sometimes, but the potential this author has is *huge*.

Moving into the plot, I have to say it was interesting. Sometimes it felt a bit... as if the author was playing it safe. I saw a big plot twist coming but aside from that, it was not that predictable. It felt in a way like any other YA fantasy book in terms of twists, conflict, tropes, and characters but as I said before the talent and the world-building set it on another level where those basic aspects could be overlooked.

Talking about the characters… yeah, not much was unique there in terms of tropes, however, they were not flat 2d characters, which I’m glad. The book touches on some topics like grief, abandonment, and abuse, which I think were handled well, however, I’m not really versed on this topic, so don’t take my word for it.

The world-building was probably the thing I enjoyed the most in this entire ride. It was rich and something we don’t (but totally should!) see often. It goes very well with the plot and it definitely explains everything clearly without info-dumping. As I said before, THE TALENT this author has!

It is a book worth reading if you like fantasy books and the YA range, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. A great debut and delightful word building will make you enjoy your reading time.
