The title of this book is perfect. I am 52 and I grew up in a time of racial tension in America. For awhile things seemed to improve somewhat. But now we seem to be going backwards again. I believe this is what the author is trying to say about race in America. The story takes place in three different time periods: Civil war era, 1960s Detroit race riots era and present day. She basically compares and contrasts the 3 periods using family and interracial relationships. Her research is outstanding. Her characters are beautifully fleshed-out and heartbreaking. It left you hoping the female protagonist can overcome her family's past and break through any remaining barriers society has set.
