We Hope for Better Things is the multi-generational story of three women from the Balsam family. Elizabeth's story is in the present, Nora's story is in the 1960s and Mary's story is in the 1860s...mostly in the same setting, a farm in Lapeer County, Michigan, but also set in Detroit, as that's where they came from before settling in Lapeer. All three women have experienced racial injustices in some form or another. How their lives intersect is how this story is woven together.

In stories told from multiple perspectives, I always wonder about the author's writing process. Did the author start with Mary's story and build from there or did it start in the present and work backwards?

We Hope for Better Things is a wonderfully written debut novel. There's an excerpt from the author's follow-up novel, out in Fall 2019, included in this book, and I'm already looking forward to reading it. This book will be included in my historical fiction favorites of 2018!
