This book was amazing. I absolutely love books with multiple timelines and this one was no exception. Erin Bartels wove the stories together so well, I was constantly anxious to move to the next viewpoint to see how everything was going to connect. There were twists that had me audibly gasping and other parts that had my heart breaking.

The racism was hard to read. Personally as a white woman, I’ve never experienced racism, but I live in very diverse areas and have friends of all races and ethnicities, so the thought of someone treating people I love that way was horrible. It was told in a realistic way that make you think of how far we’ve come, but also how far this world still has to go. She also included bits that showed privilege and how naive some people are when they’re not subjected to racism and I liked to see that part as well.

With two of the timelines set in the past, it’s made me remember how much I love historical fiction. For some reason I haven’t read them much the past couple years and it’s sparked a craving in me for them again!

I can’t wait to read more by Erin Bartels. I can only imagine how much she is going to grow as a writer especially starting out on such a high note. Truly a great read, I’ve already been recommending to family and friends and I only just finished it!
