A great modern historical fiction novel!
Before reading this book I knew absolutely nothing about the racial history of Detroit. Erin Bartles does a fantastic job of weaving together three different generational narratives into one story.
One sentence synopsis: Elizabeth, an investigative journalist in Detroit, learns more about her family's rich history after moving in with her Great Aunt Nora.
I normally wouldn't have picked up this book, as I thought it would have been more "Christian fiction" than "historical fiction," but I was wrong. Just because the characters have a (mentioned) relationship with God, it has nothing to do with the reader's personal beliefs.
Would recommend to anyone who enjoys a well-written, multi-generational family saga.
