Racially-sensitive situations, police investigations, and people who are leery of newspaper reporters; all of this happens in the first chapter and makes one want to know what is going to happen. I had to get past the first two pages to be interested because at first I thought the character of Linden seemed a bit too hostile, but it is important to find out that there was an issue involving the police, a mixed-race marriage of many decades ago, and that the white newspaper reporter reacts just as Linden, a black male, suspected she would. I'd like to know where this plot goes!
