This is easily one of those novels in the “contemporary” genre (going to loosely slot it into that as it seems it should be more then that but I cannot seem to find the right fit for it just yet). That could pass to be put as a mandatory reading list for schools. It’s not a difficult read potentially upper middle grade/ya would best enjoy it and learn from the lessons between the pages. It had remarkable characters, a plot worth reading through, and lessons for learning.
It has sooo much in this between lgbtq representation, biracial main female leading character, the struggles of family dynamics, homophobia, racism, a lot of that small town vibe of secrets buried even even more secrets. It’s not lyrically written but very much you’re say say on a couch pressed play to a movie and watching the the leading character come to life and going through her journey.
