This book is good, like really really good. Like it brought me to tears multiple times good. Like I need to read everything this author has ever written good. Not to mention it is such a strong title and the cover art is beautiful. It really emphasizes the fierceness of the main character Avery.

We Deserve Monuments follows the story of Avery, whose life and family have been uprooted to a small town to live with her estranged grandmother who is terminally ill. While this may seem like a basic young adult novel plot, the mysteries are what draw it forward. Why is the family estranged? What happened to Grandpa Ray? Will the monument of the racist jerk ever get torn down?? I honestly could not put this book down. The chemistry and utter realness between “Fish” and Mama Letty was refreshing, loving, and heartbreaking all at once. This book is so good I feel like I would be doing a disservice by saying much more. It is one incredible young adult contemporary!
