“We Deserve Monuments” was definitely one of my top reads of 2022, if not my favorite read of the year! This book may be geared towards young adults, but makes the perfect read for all as it never felt juvenile. This book covered some heavy themes and was a powerful read.

The writing had me hooked from the very beginning, I literally could not put this book down! The characters in this novel are fully developed and three dimensional. The friendship between Avery, Simone, and Jade is absolute perfection. It’s so heartwarming, I often found myself looking forward to scenes with all three. There was also definite chemistry between Avery and Simone, and I was rooting for them as a couple from the very beginning.

It’s hard to believe this is Jas Hammonds first novel. Their writing manages to form an emotional connection with the reader, a feat more experienced authors can’t always manage. I rarely cry at books, but this book had me in tears near the end, when everyone was gathered in the hospital room to say goodbye to Mama Letty. I truly felt like I was in the room with them and it was my loved one’s final moments.

This book is not one I will forget anytime soon, it truly was a fantastic read! I look forward to reading more Jas Hammonds novels in the future!
