Heading into her senior year of high school, Avery thinks she knows exactly what she wants. That is, until her world is turned upside down when her family moves from DC to small-town Georgia just weeks before school starts because her estranged grandmother is dying.

The story is told through the lens of Avery, whose pragmatic view on life guides her through life changing experiences, from heartbreak, racism and homophobia to friendship, love and healing. Avery is an honest and relatable narrator whose authentic story gives us a glimpse into her journey of growth through the unfolding of her discovery and processing of generational trauma. In learning where she comes from, she’s forced to consider everything she thought she knew about herself and what she wants in her life going forward.

This was a book that I didn’t want to rush through, enjoying the multiple layers as they unfolded and exposed that life is often messy and imperfect, but at the end of the day all we have is each other.
