I absolutely loved this book! The characters were multidimensional and the plot twists just kept on coming! I especially loved the developing relationship between Avery and her grandmother Mama Letty. Mama Letty was one of my favorite characters--she was so real and complex, and it was interesting how the author created this multilayered story that wove in historical events that were shown through Mama Letty's character in particular. I appreciated how this book dealt with issues around race/racism, without being just an "issues" book. This was a book about characters, relationships, and how the past affects the present/future. The author told a beautiful story that helped me as a reader experience various emotions as I was was reading. The writing kept my interest and I felt like it struck a nice balance of being plot-driven and character-driven. I look forward to reading more books by this author!
