When I saw the cover it struck me as a strong young African American and it made me wonder what the story is about. Come to find out the young lady on the cover is Avery. I mixed race 17-year-old who is suddenly uprooted to move from DC to Georgia due to her Mama Letty's declining health. However, Ava doesn't know this side of the family and from the first 2 chapters you can feel she feels like an outsider, not only because she is in the south but also because of her mix race with a white father and African American mother, and she is a lesbian and she has a lip ring and does not look like her southern family. Avery also wants to know why her Mama Letty does not like or warm up to her, what the issue is between her mother and Mama Letty and her mother's sister. It seems like this is a discovery of who Avery is and also discovering secrets her mom's side has kept secret, why racial tension, and building bonds.
