When I was first presented with this book, I said "Oh great, another family saga". There are elements of that, sure, but it's so much more. Sunday is the only girl in a family of three boys. One of her brothers is the leader who bosses the others around. One brother is autistic. One brother gets in trouble over and over again. There is also a boy who mostly grew up in their house because he was almost an orphan. His mother moved away and his father drank. These five children were called the Brennans all through school.
Five years before the start of the book, Sunday left home. She went to California, as far away from her family as she could get without leaving the country. Her family doesn't know why she left, but they believe what she tells them. According to her letters, she doing well. She has a good creative job and lots of new friends. When she gets into a one car accident because she'd been drinking, her lies are exposed. Her bossy brother goes to California and brings her back home.
While she's been gone, her fiance has married another woman and now has a son. Her bossy brother also married and has a daughter. These two men have opened a successful pub and are working on opening another that has more of a restaurant about it. There have been problems with the business expansion.
I think I was most taken by the writing. Each chapter focuses on a different character. It's all third person, so this is more of a point of view primarily of that character. Everyone gets into the act. The hand-off between the characters is an interesting technique. I think you'll like it. I totally enjoyed the story.
