We Are the Ashes, We Are the Fire by Joy McCullough is an amazing book that everyone needs to read. This book is about how sexual assault and the "justice" that follows it can affect not only the victim but the people around them. Marianne the sister of the victim goes through the book trying to find herself due to the guilt of making her sister go to trial. Her emotions are something I can only describe as survivor's guilt. McCullough took a taboo topic that most people would shy away from and turned it into a book that can educate people on the after-effects of something that has been deemed a "women's issue".
Not only did she write a good story she incorporated poetry. I am not really a big poetry reader but this book has allowed me to explore it more than I usually would. To add to all of the poetry there are multiple doodles that make this not only a beautiful story but a beautiful book.
