A little confused

This beginning excerpt talks about the main character and her sister who was a sexual assault victim. It goes through the final verdict and sentence that is brought down on the attacker.

The part where I got confused is that the attacker was declared guilty but didn't go to prison. Every time I hear of an actual guilty verdict of a rape attacker they always get jail time. There are even instances where girls have made up (yes, I know some personally) that they were raped and the courts always seemed to judge in the women's favor.

Now being as the fact that the parent of the survivor was formerly an immigrant, maybe that's why the judge sentenced so lightly (which doesn't make it right). I just didn't feel like this was actually factual to what normally happens. (Again, not saying it doesn't, just that I've never heard of it.)

The other part that was really confusing (and I'll probably get some flack for this) is I got really confused when the main character Em was talking to another girl on the bus. She kept using them, their, they which are all plural nouns (that's what they've always been) and I didn't realize until 2 pages later she was only referring to one person. I know that a lot of times this is used to denote someone who is trans, but I really feel like there needs to be a way less confusing verbiage.

The story itself did seem like it was going to be a really emotional story. And I absolutely love the cover! There are also some really good points in here that I do think are overlooked! Women do tend to be objectified which isn't okay.
