I struggled so hard to get through this book, it wasn't even funny. I was really looking forward to it because the premise sounded very interesting. However, after picking it up and going through the first 85 pages of the book and realizing that I was not engaged at all I started to get disappointed. I honestly thought about DNFing it for about the first half of the book. It wasn't until about 60% of the way through that I actually wanted to pay attention, let alone felt any investment with what was what was happening with the characters.
My main problem with the book has to do with the main character's character arc. He seems to have some deep-seated issues with other people's addiction, understandably because of how it impacted his own life, but the way he handles it is really unsavory. The way he interacts with his family and friends because of his bias is, in my opinion, unnecessary and mean. I know addiction is hard for everyone involved, but it was really frustrating to watch him hold onto negativity and brush off everyone who loves him. He does have a change of heart near the end, which could have turned the story around for me a little bit, but there wasn't enough character development within him to make his change of heart believable. This made it all seem really rushed and not well thought through.
I wish I had liked this better. I feel like it's a very valid story and is one that is not told often enough, but I really think it could have been much better done.
