We Are Inevitable puts protagonist Aaron Stein in an unenviable situation and then the book follows how he handles it. His older brother Sandy has unintentionally made his whole family's life a mess, and when the book starts Aaron's mom has left because she can't deal anymore and his father is a shell of his former self. The family's bookstore has been left in Aaron's name but no one visits the store and the bills he should never have to deal with are piling up. So Aaron makes a decision that he regrets because suddenly people do seem to care, and as they began to revitalize the bookstore Aaron digs himself deeper and deeper. Never mind that he meets a girl that he's convinced is the one but she has baggage of her own that complicates their relationship. While the book has an ending that wraps things up pretty tidily it's just not satisfying to me. I didn't necessarily expect a perfect, fairytale ending for Aaron and his friends and family but only one person really apologizes to Aaron for the situation he finds himself in. Everyone else is just kind of cranky with him for not wanting their help, without realizing that the way he's been treated (including by them) is a major factor in why he feels like he has to do everything himself, and expect that people are only helping because they want something in return.
