A failing bookstore and a father and son dynamic that is on the rocks is a recipe for disaster no matter how you try and spin it. Ira should have sold the store long ago when his wife left, but instead, he signed it over to his son and has been hiding everything that's happening financially from said son, and now they are in a big mess they can't get out of.
This leaves the son with no choice but to do the unthinkable in the father's eyes.
