This was my first read to kick off pride month this year. A gorgeous cover, a fantasy book summary, and a beginning that reels you in. I was so excited to see an all-queer cast with non-binary/gender-queer characters.
However, things took a bit of a turn after the first few chapters that left me a bit lost. I wasn’t sure where the plot had gone, which would totally be okay if this were a character-driven novel. Yet I didn’t get that vibe either. I’m disappointed because I really wanted to like this one. I absolutely adored Szabo’s debut, WHAT BIG TEETH, and expected the same for this. Overall, I was confused and struggling to get to the end. The portrayal of non-binary characters wasn’t as expected and just often left me confused when preferred pronouns (or even questioning) wasn’t established.
The concept of this book is fantastic and I wish it was just a bit more developed. I DNF’d at ~30% :(
