Suspicious much?

Lisa Jewell has a talent for writing a story where nothing happens, but everything happens. About 40 percent into this book, I realized that nothing really happened. There was a lot of innuendo, unsubstantiated concerns, and accusations, but no action occurred.

Freddie spies on the entire neighborhood with digital binoculars, yet he captures very little. Sure, there was one entry in his log that two women had "big bottoms" (I chuckled), but he didn't witness much. Jenna obsesses over her best friend's obsession with Tom, and she even stalks her snapchat locations, but what does she really catch? Jenna's mother literally skulks around hoping to catch someone in the act.

The book goes on like this, with each character being suspicious of the other characters, stalking and documenting, and not too much occurs.

But I loved it. I was all in with these characters, their neighborhood, their concerns, their pasts.

Toward the end, this slow building tornado finally unleashes onto the neighborhood. Past intertwines with the present, mysteries are explained, motives are unraveled. It's a great story. While I saw the ending coming, because there's only so much hinting an author can do before a reader figures it out, I still enjoyed the twists and turns of this book.
