An interesting novel from Lisa Jewell. While I’ve never read any of her previous books, after finishing “Watching You”, I enjoyed most, if not all, of the plot’s fixation on the line between what is good or bad. To start off, I dug the three perspectives Jewell wrote: Joey(Josephine), Freddie Fitzwilliam, and Jenna, including the short police interviews. The chapters headed with different characters were delicately placed with the right person to tell their comings and goings. The one common denominator they all shared was one man; Tom Fitzwilliam. I wasn’t sure with his character, I didn’t like him at all throughout the novel including Freddie, I was disgusted by both of them, especially Freddie’s antics. Joey was in a midlife crisis which made sense because she was impulsive, unstable, vulnerable, and attracted to a man that was not her husband. Her life was a mess. She was the only real character to me. Jenna’s perspective was interesting, along with her mom they had a crazy dynamic. The only thing I wish happened sooner was Jenna and Freddie meeting up sooner to discuss theories about the connections between what was happening in Melville Heights along with the Lake District Woman. It was too drawn out it needed to be sooner One problem I had, and I’ve seen this in a lot of mysteries is: not including the villain(antagonist) in the book and develop the character at all because obviously for the reader to not know anything about that character will make us disregard who they are and not pay attention to the signs. For me personally I don’t like not knowing and I wish the author gave us clues just like the rest of the characters in the book.I gave this book 3.5 stars because honestly I knew from the get go I didn’t appreciate this genre as much as others do, so I’m not a fan of this this style of writing and world building, but it definitely held up as a good read and for those who are interested in twists and turns, then get ready for a lot of shock and awe. The book was easy to follow and quick to go through, so if you’re looking for a fast mystery read then this your type of novel.
