A spooky little story! I feel like haunted houses and ghost stories are some of the scariest beginnings for books. This story has those things and more. This book has some added character depth with the main character struggling. This is good because it helps the reader not question the decision to stay in a haunted location. The sad past of the main character, the female narrator, also adds some depth to the stories. I have read a few haunted house novels, and this worked to separate this one a little bit. The reader roots for the narrator and wants her to make smart choices.
Many haunted house novels take time to build; that’s just kind of the norm for this subset of the genre. This follows that pattern. With time and story development, I think this will be quite a spooky tale. I’m definitely looking forward to reading more and seeing how the story progresses.
