Watch Over Me is a haunting tale set on rural farm that is the perfectly atmospheric. This is a story of loss and grief but also healing from trauma. This story is character driven and I was immersed from the start.

When Mila aged out of the foster care system she felt lucky to find a job that included living arrangements in rural Northern California. Mila is looking for a home and a place to fit in. The farm is a refuge for Mila but it’s also haunted by the past. As Mila’s memories of the past begin to resurface she relates closely to the traumas of the children surrounding here. This story is beautifully written. With an almost lyrical flow it’s seems poetic. This is my first encounter with Nina Lacour but I’m certain it won’t be my last.

This book successfully tackles grief, loss, suffering, trauma, healing and a sense of belonging. If you’re looking for a hauntingly beautiful story, give this a read!
