This book is a sci-fi novel about the Nigerian civil war. I love the way Tochi mixes a real historical event with Afro-futurism. There are mechs, soldiers with bionic limbs and artificial organs, and advanced gadgets that are beyond just guns. We follow two sisters, Onyii and Ify as they both use their own strengths to get through this war in one piece.

I didn't know much about this war before reading this book so I found that completely interesting. I noticed the book said it was for ages 12 and up and I'd have to disagree. This book gets hella dark. There's drugs, suicide bombing, and people getting killed in detail. This one started a little slow for me as I'm not a big reader of sci-fi but let me tell you, once it gets going it gets going! There's so much action throughout. Tochi shows us such a very clear picture of this war. We see the child soldiers that were used to fight in this war. We also see the effects this has on these children that are forced to grow up too soon. The physical and mental toll it takes on someone that has been taught to be a killing machine. We also see the interference from other countries that have come to "help" but really have come to take. This was a nice book to dip my toe into science fiction!

I think this book would be perfect for fans of the Binti series by Nnedi Okorafor.
