War Girls is a rollercoaster of a story but it's focused around two sister, Onyii and Ify after climate change and nuclear disasters have ruined most of the Earth. They start living in camp, safe from the war that surrounds them in a futuristic Nigeria, but that quickly changes when their compound is attacked and Onyii is left for dead and Ify is kidnapped...or so she thinks.

Separated from each other, they go on to live lives of their own. Onyii becomes the ultimate warrior and Ify realizes who she was meant to be and grows up in the modern city with the man who kidnapped her, Darren.

With Onyii thinking Ify is dead and Ify learning things about Onyii she never knew before, the two end up on opposite sides of a war. And as happens with war, it changes people and that goes for Onyii and Ify too. They lose so many friends and sisters that it changes them. PTSD and trauma is no joke.

The relationship between Onyii and Ify is expertly developed. I loved watching them change and grow apart and come together again. It's possibly the best character development I've ever seen written. They go through so much and the author showed the effects of that through how these sisters changed separately and how they changed together.

My one critique is the length of the story. There were several points of the book where I felt like it could have ended and the story would have been complete. The last third to quarter of the book felt like extra that could have been edited out. It was still enjoyable but it did drag on a bit. I also wonder about this being a series. Most of the characters are dead. Will the next book be about a different character's perspective? I'm interested to see.

I'm giving War Girls 3.5 out of 5 stars.
