Waiting For the Night Song is unique in that it's depictions of nature are so front and center as to almost overshadow the plot to the story. I don't mean that as a bad thing, but it's certainly interesting to feel a greater focus on the environment than the pretty significant drama taking place. The book is certainly timely, tackling climate change, government hostility to science and the reality of climate change, hostility to immigrants...it never tells you it's set in Trump's America but I absolutely feel it. Although the whole plot is mystery/thriller, it somehow feels slow because of the time we take exploring Cadie's past and present relationship with nature. Again, I don't necessarily say that as a bad thing, just interesting when compared to the typical fast-paced thriller genre. The writing does get a bit over the top at time, but overall I enjoyed this and would recommend it to others.
