Before I say anything, I want to note that there are several similar books to Waiting for the Night Song that are huge hits, but weren’t for me. The most notable being Where the Crawdads Sing. Waiting for the Night Song is similar in that it’s beautifully atmospheric. You feel like you are right there in the New Hampshire woods.. I mean, look at this cover! That’s an important component given that the book speaks to the damages in the environment and impact of humans on the forest. The book is also a slow-burn, which I know many enjoy, but I am just not patient enough for it. I really enjoyed the back story, where the girls were young, but the current story and investigation dragged a bit for me. This book is already receiving great reviews, and I think just like with Crawdads, I’m in the minority here, but it didn’t quite do it for me.

“Hers should have been a fairy tale childhood. Two loving parents. A cottage in the woods. But fairy tales always turn dark, especially the ones that take place in a forest.”

Waiting for the Night Song comes out 1/12.
