I found the opening of this novel a bit confusing. The dialogue between the friends and the setting felt a bit contrived to me. I do think someone seeking a more plot-based novel with an unusual setting and unique circumstances will be drawn to this novel, but it's not for me. I wish there was more character development so that I felt pulled into their struggles and relationships, but I wasn't getting a good "feel" for them in the initial chapters of the novel.
That said, some of the descriptions of nature and the forest setting are lovely, especially since some (or all?) of the novel is set in New Hampshire, which I am very familiar with.
I don't know this author and while this particular novel doesn't feel like a good fit for me, I would explore other titles from Dalton. I am mildly curious about where this novel ends up so I may even look for spoilers at some point!
