At first, I wasn’t sure about this book. It seemed to be just another story about a girl/boy who leaves home and can’t return home because a terrible past event. There is that in this novel for sure but it’s really so much more. Cadie is summoned back to her child home by her then best friend because a body has turned up; a body they know a lot about. When she returns, she is flooded with suppressed memories and fears as she and her friend grapple with a difficult dilemma. Do they come forth and tell the truth or allow others to take the blame? The story swings back and forth between past and present so the reader is allowed to see just how events unfolded and how those events have influenced Cadie as an adult and all the decisions she’s made in her life. Along with the murder mystery is a warning about climate change. As an entomologist who studies beetles whose behavior predicts forest fires, Cadie desperately tries to force people to understand what’s happening. As fires flare up her predictions come true. It’s a good wake up call after so man fires in Colorado, California, and Australia these past years. The climax is exciting and keeps the reader interested. A great read
