What a beautiful story that Julie Carrick Dalton has written! I listened to this on audiobook thanks to @macmillanaudio and what a joy it was to listen to. A story revolving around two childhood friends with a deep secret that could destroy both their lives. Cadie, a girl more comfortable in the woods among the trees and birds and Daniela, self-assured and popular, make an unlikely pair of friends. Their idyllic summer of friendship ends with a tragic secret behind them. Each woman has moved on and made a life for themselves but when Daniela calls Cadie back to her childhood home, she realizes that everything she’s worked for could be destroyed.

Ms. Dalton has captured the magic of childhood friendship and set it in one of the most gorgeous landscapes I’ve yet to see. The New Hampshire forest is described in glorious detail; all the flora and fauna are brought to life through Cadie’s narration and her love for them.

This is most definitely a murder mystery but it also sheds a bright light on racism from the past continuing into the present. There is a strong sense of standing up for what is right when the choice is sometimes in the muddy area of morality but done with the love of others at heart is a theme that plays often and one that I think many of us struggle with. I think the author captured this beautifully and with grace. The issue of climate change is addressed and the effect it has on our woodlands along and that it’s up to us to care before it’s too late. So many important topics meshed in with this mystery that made it a compelling listen for me.

Barrie Kreinik narrated this story and she did not disappoint. Her voice has a beautiful wide-ranging timbre with a pace that moves effortlessly between chapters and characters, bringing the story to life as I listen.
