This is a hard book to review and rate. There were points of the book that were very interesting and there were points that moved so slowly I considered not finishing the book. All together I think it was a decent story and it does tackle a lot of super important issues like climate change and immigration. The story was told in two ambiguous timelines of “that summer” and “present day.” “That summer” is the summer that changed the main character, Cade’s, life. The traumatic adventures she and her best friend Daniela survived helped guide her to the rebellious insect scientist who broke onto federal property to continue her research about a species of beetles that is invading because of climate change and leaving dead trees that are a huge risk for fire due to the drought. But her research isn’t what brings her home after all these years though, she comes home when Daniela texts her to come home because they found the body.
