Beautifully Composed Debut
3.5 stars, rounded up
This is a beautifully composed debut novel that tells the story of a childhood friendship translated into a present-day mystery of sorts. It's not really about the mystery, it's about loyalty, the environment, and multiple facets of immigration and racism. If that sounds like a lot to unpack, it is, but the author does handle it deftly.
The complexities of Cadie's job as a research entomologist attempting to prove that certain beetles are making forest more susceptible to forest fires is interesting, however it does get a bit bogged down when combined with the other issues in the novel. The writing is stellar though, and carries the plot even when the details get overwhelming at times. I loved the character of Sal and her bright spirit that causes all of the adults in the story to take a look at the way they hide and accept their fates rather than pursuing justice.
Overall an intriguing and worthwhile read. Thank you to Forge for sending my review copy.
