Cadie Kessler is in a life-long conversation with the forest. One wandering, mud-stained summer of her childhood, she tucked away a secret and proffered it to the woods for safe-keeping. Presently she reads the bark for etchings of the invasive mountain pine beetle, listens for the song of the endangered thrush bird through the branches, and watches the forest floors heave up ancient geologic records in rubble and slabs. The granite tells us that the land won’t hide Cadie’s secret forever.

Waiting for the Night Song is a radiant love letter to the wilderness of New Hampshire and the wilderness within. The first chapters hint at omens of climate change and xenophobia. Immersive writing transports the reader alongside Cadie.

Time warps on the forest understory, where the past folds into the present, and the present foretells endangerment. These woods, ever-watchful, know our stories.
