Such Vibrant Descriptions
I recently enjoyed Lief Enger's "Peace Like a River" for the first time and was excited to learn the author was releasing a new novel after a long hiatus.
I enjoy many things about this author's writing, including his Midwestern settings, distinct characters with meaningful names, but mostly his vibrant descriptions: "They came one at a time or in shy small groups." "His gentle baritone came at me like elbows." "He had eight-day whiskers and fisherman hands ...." I can easily form mental images from these colorful metaphors.
From reading these first few pages, I want to become better acquainted with Virgil Wander and Rune Sandstrom and learn the reason everyone in Greenstone, Minnesota knows Alec Sandstrom. I enjoy many books on audio, but this is one I'd like to savor as a print book so I can mark and return to favorite passages.
