This was my first time reading a book by Leif Enger, but it won't be my last. Virgil Wander is a wonderful book, with likable characters and a story that is both heartbreaking and uplifting. The small town feel of the book pervades every scene, every interaction, and makes you fall in love. As the characters get to know one another again after an accident leaves Virgil Wander with difficulty finding words and some new personality traits, they also embrace a newcomer to town, Rune, who is hoping to learn about the son he never knew he had who vanished years before this story takes place.

The characters are quirky but so real - they're the people you got to know if you grew up in a small town yourself, or ever spent much time in one. They take care of each other but manage to keep a few secrets. I would recommend this to anyone needing a break from the day to day grind - let yourself fall in love with Virgil, his friends, and his little town. And maybe go fly a kite - I know I wanted to after reading this.
