Sometimes authors suffer from their own success and I think Leif Enger is one of them. Whenever I get a new book of his, I'm always trying a little to recapture the magic of Peace Like a River, which isn't fair to the current narrative, I know. (Another victim of this is Yann Martel.) But I still really like Enger's voice and this story, like all his books, has a quiet whimsy braided in with the seriousness and dignity of yet another man dragged off course by happenstance.

Virgil is a good, solid protagonist and while I didn't always re-discover the simple pleasures of existence alongside him, I did enjoy seeing where the narrative went. It was a little predictable at times, but Enger is a good writer and I didn't mind so much. I think this is a great book for a spring day or a long journey.
