Virgil Wander lives in a small midwestern town and owns a dying movie theater called The Empress. One day his car drives off a cliff into Lake Superior and we read his story in the aftermath. Rune is an avid Kite Flyer and stranger in town. They form an unlikely friendship. Nadine and Bjorn are living a life different from the one they expected after the disappearance of a loved one.⠀

There are so many more characters that fill the pages of this book. This is the story of a town full of bad luck, friendship, superstitions, romance and the power of community.⠀

Enger writes with a beautifully descriptive writing style and well-developed characters. I really enjoyed reading about this quirky little town. But the story was lacking for me. It is definitely character driven and not plot driven. In my opinion, there wasn’t much of a plot. The ending seemed out of place in my mind, but I loved the emphasis on community.
