Virgil Wander is the story of a small town and how its inhabitants rally around those in need. Although the titled character is central to the novel, his place in the book is no more important than some of the others. Virgil's accident and subsequent medical issue should have been compelling in and of itself, but the author just did not take the idea far enough. The book itself was wordy and the plot meandered along in such a way that I did not feel a sense of urgency to finish. I did not find any of the characters to be endearing and was not all that impressed overall. Readers who like stories that take place in a small town setting may like the world building, but I personally found the book to be disappointing because it fell short of my expectations.
