Contemporary Chinese science fiction is an interesting blend of the 21st century world with 1950s-style speculative concepts. Vagabonds, by relatively new writer Hao Jingfang, has previously been translated to German, and is newly translated to English by Ken Liu - a significant American science fiction writer in his own right.

I've read an excerpt from her novel, and while there are a couple of oddities in the conceptualization of Earth-Mars space travel, the text is lucidly translated by Liu, and I found Hao's setting and characters intriguing. As in Cixin Liu's Three Body Problem, I expect this read to be as much about learning what science fiction readers of China are like, as the story itself. I do hope I get the chance to read this.
