My first impression of "Vagabonds" is that the writing is lyrical and smooth. While brief, this first impression left me wanting to get to know these characters better, especially the students returning to Mars. I am also intrigued to know more about the contingent from Earth and the various motivations that are in play there. I am especially curious about the message that the aging captain wants delivered to one of the Mars colonists. The bits of history that are revealed in these first few pages have sucked me in, and the ideas presented in the summary make me want to know so much more about the conflict and the colonies. At first I thought the cover was a little plain, reminding me a little of some of the Ernest Cline covers, but when I gave it a second look and realized that the images in red were scenes from the surface of Mars, I changed my mind.
