This is an extremely well written book and perfect for any true crime fan, so realistic that I had to remind myself it wasn’t fiction because it read like a story. I appreciate how honest Holes is about his work and home life. He admits to not being the best family man due to being obsessed with work. Mr. Holes shares different cases he’s worked on in this book. Some of the cases
are relatively unknown while others are very high profile. Some of these are solved, some not. I love how Holes openly shares the physical and mental toll decades of exposure to the worst things people do to each other have taken on him.
To me, what makes this book five-star special is that this memoir is honest, personal, detailed about crime scenes and victims and killers but never lurid, exploitive or insensitive to the victims, unlike some others I've read. Unmasked is the true and honest story of the man who among other accomplishments helped catch the Golden State Killer, one of the most cruel and cunning serial offenders whose crimes Holes discovered on his first day of work in an old cabinet full of cold cases.
