I was really excited for Unmasked when I saw it on the upcoming release list. I enjoyed the first look and I thought the memoir had a lot of promise. The premise of a high profile cold case detective who also struggled with mental health throughout his career was incredibly intriguing. When I found out I won a copy, I anxiously awaited the book's arrival to my Post Office box. It showed up a little late, but when it did arrive, I devoured the first three chapters in one sitting, but quickly I lost interest in finishing the book after that point. I can't point to one specific factor that left me underwhelmed and I will say that Unmasked is an "OKAY" book. However, it died a death of a thousand cuts. The writing is okay, but unremarkable; the author is interesting at first, but becomes boring; the pacing isn't great. These factors and more all add up to a book that failed to execute on it's promises.
