I very seldom read memoirs because I typically feel like they are a way for the author to brag about their life. I did not find that with Paul Holes’ true crime memoir. I was enraptured from the beginning, and I had a hard time putting this book down, even with some of the graphic and gory descriptions of crime scenes.

Paul Holes is truly built different, and we should all be glad for that. He puts his mind on a case and he doesn’t stop until he has an answer -even if that answer is decades later. I couldn’t believe some of the high-profile cases that Mr. Holes was investigating, and I was even more in awe of how dedicated and determined he was in finding the true answers. I was fascinated in learning about the forensic processes that are used to test DNA and to build evidence against a murder suspect. I was also equally fascinated with how raw and honest Mr. Holes was in explaining the mental and emotional toll working these cases had on him.

I really cannot rave enough about this book. I commend Mr. Holes for his dedication to the profession and to the victims’ families in their search for justice. While this book is fantastic and informative, it is not for the faint of heart. There are some very graphic descriptions of what happened to some of the victims, and of what the victims looked like when the detectives arrived on scene, so reader beware. Otherwise I would recommend this book to any true crime junkie who is interested in what the process and timeframe is like (in real life) trying to get DNA samples tested and piecing together the most likely case of what happened.

All the stars and then some. Fantastic book.
