Jane Tennison is a police officer that thinks she's seen it all, but in a city like London, with secrets buried everywhere no one can ever see it all.

It starts with a discovery, a coffin unearthed during the renovations at a historic convent, the construction crew thinks it's just a case of something being buried in the wrong place, they even debate opening the coffin or just going on with their work, if only they knew the world of horror this would open into.

You'd think the church would want this case solved at all costs, a Nun, one of their own killed and buried on church land, but you'd be wrong, they seemed to want to keep this as quiet as possible, and while I understand it, it still makes you wonder... what other secrets are they protecting.

Before long Tennison has the answer to that question as well as how long the Nun had been buried, thanks to the autopsy there's no doubt, the Nun was murdered and had been buried for 25 years. As she digs deeper and deeper into the history surrounding the convent she finds so many horror stories, things that might break a younger police officer but not Jane Tennison.

Every new clue makes her more determined to solve this case and bring peace to all of those that were harmed. But not everyone want's the same thing Tennison does, before long she finds herself in the middle and knows she's not just trying to solve a crime at this point, she's trying to keep another from being committed.

This one kept me guessing until the very end, it's refreshing to not know who the killer is half way through a book, and this one, even when I thought I had it figured out I was wrong. Lydia La Plante has officially joined my go to list for this genre, I can't wait to read more.

I flew through this book, and even though it's the 7th in a series it can be read as a stand alone and be enjoyed.
