In some ways, there were aspects of this story that seemed drawn straight from the news. Over the past year there have been revelations about the mistreatment of children of First Peoples in Canada and Native Americans in the United States during their time in Roman Catholic schools. In Unholy Murder we are taken inside a long closed convent orphanage in England. The focus is on the twenty year old murder of a young nun. The investigation reveals the mistreatment handed out by the now deceased Mother Superior and her chief assistant. The author does a wonderful job of spinning out the trail of evidence, clues, and false leads in search of the truth.

I have followed the main character throughout the seven volumes of the TENNISON series and watched the author carefully paint a picture of her growth as a detective. As a detective, she has a good balance between deductive and inductive reasoning. Some of her suppositions are based on clear facts that move the investigation forward, but some lead to mistakes and misjudgements. Along this book’s journey Jane made mistakes; some resulted in serious consequences. In fact serious mistakes were made by several of the main characters and all of them had negative consequences.

In the end, though, growth never happens without mistakes. The person who never makes a mistake in their chosen profession is a person who has never done anything worth doing. The question is not about making mistakes, it is about what you do with those mistakes and what you learn from them. I got the impression that Jane and her chief assistant DC Boon learned important lessons that would not soon be forgotten.

I loved this book! I could not put it down until I reached the conclusion. It painted a very disturbing picture of the church and its hierarchy, but then again that did not surprise me much.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a carefully paced, well plotted crime investigation story! I am grateful to BookishFirst for allowing me to read this book with the expectation that I would offer an honest review.
