Lynda La Plante's novel of DS Jane Tennyson's attempt to solve a cold case is just what I thought it would be: interesting and intriguing. Her attempts to solve the case despite the condescension and other obstacles presented by her male colleagues does give the reader something to root for. I will say though, that the book is part of a series, and although the author does a fair job of giving some background, first time readers can get a bit lost if they have not read the prior books, like myself.

I also felt that at times, in the author's quest for realism, she tended to focus on some minute details. I mean, is it really necessary for me to know that the protagonist sat down for a bit of a sandwich before continuing on the case? It broke immersion in places and knocked down my rating of four stars to three. Still, "Unholy Murder" is overall a fascinating mystery, and is well worth a read.
